My last post on this Substack was in March 2021. Back then, I was still working in international education, in a field I often refer to as ‘strategic analysis’.
You may have signed up back then, forgotten about it, and now find yourself wondering who I am and what this is.
Well, here is a reintroduction.
Hey, I’m Darragh Murray, an analytics and data guy based in Brisbane, Australia. I started this newsletter because I wanted to talk more about data visualisation in the humanities. After all, while I am a data nerd, I did study both history and international relations extensively during my undergraduate and postgraduate university years.
Fast forward more than four years to now, and I’m in a bit of a different place! I’ve left the world of international education behind and have changed employers, and industries, twice. Now I work as an analytics specialist in the energy sector here in Australia (specifically transmission), which is a fascinating place to be at the moment.
However, I still have this unbearable need to write, and while I haven’t exactly been a regular on Substack recently, I’ve always maintained a desire to get back into writing.
So here I am. Back, I think. But this time, I’m changing it up.
I’m broadening the theme to be more about the practice of being a data professional in somewhat exciting and arguably turbulent times. While I think there will still be a healthy dose of ‘humanities’ from time to time, I’ll be more focused on discussing the practice of being a data professional, particularly in sub-disciplines such as data visualisation and analytics engineering.
Other topics might cover particular technologies, methodologies, or applications of different disciplines to particular problems reflecting on my own two decades of experience in the field. I’m hoping to post weekly at this stage.
Anyway, I figure some (maybe many) of you might just hit the unsubscribe button right about now. I do understand. But if you have even a smidgen of interest in such things, I’d encourage you to stick around and engage. I know I’d appreciate your eyeballs and also your thoughts.
Keep an eye out in the next day or so for my first new post, which I’m hoping to share on Wednesday.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading, and talk soon!
